The Power of Your Subconscious Mind

If you are a 'self help freak' you may have heard or read about the power of the subconscious mind. If not, don't worry. This is a detailed blog. Let's start from the beginning. So, "What is the subconscious mind?" Many years back, famous Austrian psychologist Sigmund Freud introduced the Three level mind model. According to this model, our mind has three levels:
  1. Conscious - It defines all thoughts and actions within our awareness. For Example, the beauty and pleasant smell of a flower.
  2. Subconscious - It defines all automatic actions and reactions we are not aware of but can be if we think about them. For Example, our ability to drive a car. Once we get skilled, we stop thinking about which gears to use, which pedals to press etc. Yet we can become aware of them if we think about them.
  3. Unconscious - It defines all past memories and events, inaccessible to us, no matter how hard we try but they affect our decisions. For Example, the first word we have learned to say or how it felt to be able to walk on our own.
(This is only a brief summary of a vast concept. You can find many articles on the internet regarding this concept if you want to learn about it in detail.)

But what is written in this book (and a few others also) about the power of the subconscious mind is highly exaggerated. According to them, what is once registered or believed by our subconscious mind, it will make that happen in reality. For Example, according to them if you again and again tell your subconscious mind that 'you are rich', it will get registered in your subconscious mind and it will help you in becoming rich. It is something similar to the 'Law of Attraction'.

Honestly speaking, I don't see any logic in this concept and have not even read any scientific or biological reason on which this concept is based. According to scientists, the subconscious mind only lightens the load of your conscious mind by automating what you do again and again. This is a very important function and that is why our subconscious is considered so powerful. But this book is entirely based on a false concept. Don't get me wrong. I am not opposing the practices of Auto-Suggestion and Visualization. I believe that they are extremely powerful but in the end Action is the most important thing. These things just supplement Action. We must not rely on them and keep our whole focus on Actions.

In Short, according to me (I can of course be wrong), not only this book but this whole concept is overrated and exaggerated and instead of investing your time in this book or any other similar one, you can read other books which tell in short about our Subconscious Mind and it's power. A couple of books that come to my mind are Think and Grow Rich and You can Win. You will get the entire book's teachings if you read only the small chapters on the subconscious mind in these two books.

Only you can fulfill your dreams, your subconscious cannot do it for you.
