A self-help book from psychological point of view, this
book is based on a single state of mind namely Flow. According to the author, “Flow
is the state in which people are so involved in an activity that nothing else
seems to matter; the experience itself is so enjoyable that people will do it
even at great cost, for the sheer sake of doing it.” I am quite sure everyone
of us have experienced such a state more than once in our lifetime. And I believe
we mostly experience it when we our doing something of our interest, something
that excites us, something which is our passion.
Anyways, the book not only describes this state of mind in detail but also lists it’s benefits and also the ways in which we can achieve flow while doing various type of activities. Some activities are flow-producing by nature such as sports, music, dance etc. But we don’t spend most of our lives doing these activities (unless we are professionals, which most of us are not). So, the author teaches us how to develop an ‘autotelic personality’ that will help us achieve flow in any activity we perform even in our daily work that we do for a living.
Although the author has described the state of flow very vividly and every reader will be able to relate with it but he doesn’t give enough knowledge about how to achieve flow from activities that don’t excite us. But that’s not his fault either because according to me flow is rarely achieved when we do some work that we don’t love to do. That is why self-help authors teach us that we should do what we love to do and we should follow our passion. Flow is reason behind this advice. We can easily get into the state of flow while we are doing what we love to do. We can also achieve it while doing something else but that is an extremely rare case. Nevertheless, even if we are following our passion, there are many other activities that we do in our life that are necessary for survival and growth. This book will help you achieve flow in such activities and hence enjoy them.
